What did the weight trial find?
Semaglutide, the medicine in Ozempic and Wegovy, copies the action of GLP-1, a gut hormone involved in appetite and blood sugar. FDA-approved semaglutide products exist in the United States. Approval belongs to those products, rather than anything carrying the ingredient's name.
In a large weight-management trial, adults with overweight or obesity, without diabetes, lost more weight on average with semaglutide than with placebo. A placebo is a comparison without the active medicine. Both groups also received lifestyle support.
That's a useful finding about people over time. It isn't a forecast of your own weight change. The average can't tell you whether the medicine fits your health history or how well you'd tolerate it.
The heart finding has its own limits
Another large trial measured serious heart and blood-vessel events. It found fewer events with semaglutide than with placebo. Participants already had cardiovascular disease and overweight or obesity, without diabetes.
The main measure combined cardiovascular death, nonfatal heart attack and nonfatal stroke. Keeping those details attached matters: the trial doesn't establish the same protection for everyone, or show that every part of that combined measure changed equally.
Unwanted effects count too
A safety review describes nausea, vomiting and other digestive effects, along with an increased risk of gallbladder disease. Benefits and uncomfortable effects can belong to the same medicine. For some people, those effects are enough to stop treatment.
The review also leaves questions about uncommon harms unresolved. A successful trial doesn't rule out every rare risk. Medical history and other medicines still matter in a care discussion.
The preparation matters
Compounded semaglutide isn't FDA-approved. The FDA's explanation says it doesn't check compounded drugs for safety, effectiveness or quality before they're sold. Results from an approved medicine can't verify an unfamiliar preparation.
The comparison shows how these human trials differ from the other topics. This page gives no dose or treatment plan.
